City hands over yet another $770,900 to Ottawa mayor’s company
OTTAWA – The Ottawa and District Labour Council said today that for the period July 1, 2008 to September 30, 2008 the city of Ottawa has awarded Calian, a company that Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien continues to own shares in and be involved with its operations, three separate contracts totaling $770,900.
Prior to the October 2006 municipal election that saw Calian board member Larry O’Brien elected as Ottawa’s mayor Calian hadn’t received a single contract from the city of Ottawa. In 2007 over $1.1 million dollars in contracts were awarded to Calian. “We’ve stated before and we continue to say that this looks absolutely horrible,” said Sean McKenny, president of the Ottawa and District Labour Council.
In addition to the $770,900 in city contracts awarded Calian for the three month period from July 1, 2008 to September 30, 2008 another $679,115 in city contracts was awarded to Calian for the period April 1, 2008 to June 30, 2008 bringing the total thus far this year to approximately $1.5 million in contracts awarded to the mayor’s company. A list of all city contracts awarded for the period July 1, 2008 to September 30, 2008 is a part of today’s Corporate Services and Economic Development committee meeting agenda which gets underway at 10:00 AM in the Champlain Room at City Hall.
The Labour Council has in the past suggested that the mayor was in a conflict of interest because of his refusal to step off the board of Calian. “That’s almost $3 million that Calian has been awarded in under two years courtesy of the taxpayers in this city at a time when the mayor continues to blame workers for the financial difficulties of the city” said McKenny. “That he continues to completely ignore the optics of this and instead flaunts it is absolutely mind boggling and more than questionable,” he added.
The Ottawa and District Labour Council (ODLC) has been the voice of working people in the Ottawa area since 1872. The ODLC currently represents 90 local unions with a combined membership of close to 45,000 working men and women and is the largest democratic and popular organization in the Ottawa area.
